Industry Toolkit Resource Library

There are a number of tools, guides, and white papers available for seafood industry actors interested in implementing traceability systems.  This library highlights some of the key resources created specifically to help companies determine how the traceability process works and what is required to meet their sustainability goals.

Traceability Principles for Wild Caught Seafood Products

World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) outlines six tracebility principles that provide a basic framework for the effectiveness and successful implementation of traceability systems and for enabling transparency in wild-caught seafood product supply chains.  These principles are intended as goal statements and can be used as a guide to develop auditable benchmark processes applicable to a variety of  traceability systems.

Seafood Traceability Financial Tool

The Global Food Traceability Center (GFTC) provides an interactive tool that allows organizations in the seafood industry to assess the potential financial impact (costs and benefits) associated with implementing traceability.  This tool can be used to calculate approximate returns on investment that result from implementing a traceability program, including new market opportunities, lower costs, and increased margins.

Risk Assessment Data Sources Tool

This industry tool is a categorized list of websites and publications that provide information relevant to companies as they evaluate risk in their supply chain.   Companies can choose and utilize the resources from the list that best apply to their business structure and goals.

Taking the First Steps Towards Full Chain Traceability

This guide assists companies in determining what is needed within the walls of their business (internal traceability), as well as understand needs of trading partners up and down their supply chains (external traceability).  The guide provides information and specific actions to support companies as they embark on a path towards implementing robust traceability, and may be used to help determine the “appropriate” set of technology solutions necessary for supply chain traceability.

FishWise provides recommendations to assist companies, retailers, and foodservice providers with understanding the level of traceability commitment they need in order to achieve their traceability goals.  These recommendations can help determine the required commitment level and the associated key data elements that need to be collected at each node in the supply chain to ensure desired traceability goals are achieved.

In this interactive tool, seafood companies are guided through the process of learning more about how various traceability-related factors affect consumer preference for different types of seafood.  This tool can be used by companies to better understand the elements involved in consumer preferences relating to traceability, including variables such as choice share, relative demand, and ways in which different attributes can impact choice shares.
FishWise’s white paper summarizes the seafood traceability landscape, including current challenges, a discussion of international and regional governance, and steps that seafood businesses can take to improve the traceability of seafood within their supply chains.  This is a tool to help conservation NGOs, traceability experts, and industry join forces to improve seafood traceability. The document provides businesses with background information on traceability in seafood, as well as provides resources businesses can use to plan and implement traceability and anti-IUU fishing protocols.

Conservation Alliance members and collaborators work to tackle challenges that are too big for any one organization or business to solve alone, and contributors share expertise and develop tools that help businesses advance their sustainable seafood commitments.  The Conservation Alliance Resource Library includes tools and resources for those interested in supply chain traceability, social responsibility, and fishery improvements.
